Dress Up that Boring Crochet Hat

Got a Boring Little Beanie?
~Give it some pizzazz and turn it into an adorable gift.

Recently I started pulling little crochet beanies from my WIP’s tote.  They were solid colors and some were hats that I planned on putting animal faces on for some cool critter hats.

At least when they were originally crocheted that was the plan but you’re a crafter–You know how when we get an idea from outta nowhere we tend to run with it.  I did just that.

Double crochet beanie in white with single crochet trim in hot pink and a large white button

0-3 Month white double crocheted beanie.

I removed the last two rows of double crochet, substituted it with four rows of single crochet in magenta and sewed on a button.

To finish it off and hide the sewing thread, I wove the magenta yarn in and out of the button.

Black crochet baby hat with floppy brim, earflaps and Icord ties. Features a pink band and crochet rose

Originally this was black beanie that I was going to use to make a skunk or penguin hat.  I removed the last two rows of double crochets and redid the first with an eyelet row by skipping every other dc and making a ch1 in its place.  Then I added the last row back in.

The floppy brim is made in the front loops and the earflaps are made in the back loops.  When the earflaps were done I crocheted a 3 stitch i cord for the ties.  The pink strap is also i cord and I covered the join with a big fluffy rose.  The rose isn’t on pattern, I remembered seeing how it was done on Heidi Bears website but was on a roll and didn’t want to go look it up so it’s an ‘inspired by’ I guess?  LOL  If you want more info about how this hat was done just leave me a message in the comments

The Anna hat.   This is a hot pink hat with a row of hdc and solid shell stitch BLO.  The flower is an Art Deco Rose made with some Red Heart Baby Yarn that had a mind of it’s own.  The leaves were made from memory of this pattern: Mamachee Crocheted Leaves

This is the hat part of one of my Easter Bunny crochet hats that I sold as photography props last spring.  It’s what I called a ‘revised’ pebble stitch and double stranded with the most incredible yarn.  The pink stripe was already there, I just added a rose with the same yarn.

This hat was to be a snowman critter cap but it never got finished.  The poor thing sat there and then one day I came across my pearly beads.  A few minutes later we have one of my all time favorite hats.

This hat was packed away in my WIP’s for couple or more years until one day I came across a crochet flower pattern from Hectanoonga and I remembered Ally had not taken her light sage yarn home with her… When the flowers and the bead were added I decided this hat could use a little brim.  Walah!

Ok, now maybe this one is my favorite…This is made from Lion Brand Pound of Love—yarn that for the longest time I could not like.  This little hat changed my mind.  Someday I’ll share this one…

Never underestimate the power of the right yarn for the project.   If you only knew how simple this one was.

A hat saved from becoming a puppy dog, an irritation because I couldn’t remember how to make a rose and an ‘I can free style a leaf’ and a few minutes later it is a little girl’s hat. :)
