Double Crochet Snow Boarder Hat Pattern
I wanted to make a puppy dog hat with earflaps for a new baby but most of the patterns I found either made 15″ hats…which is 2 inches too big for newborn babies [who have 13″-14″ heads] or the patterns called for a small crochet hook, [which I don’t have yet] OR the patterns were something like 0-6 months..there is a huge difference between a 10 day old baby and a 6 month old!!
So I just decided to work up my own patterns. In the process I also came up with this pattern for 0-3 months which will fit a head size up to about 14.5″ around.
Baby Ski Hat Pattern with Double Crochet Ear Flaps
Gauge= 6 stitches = 2″
This is crocheted in the round and in a spiral meaning you do not join and chain and you do not turn. To keep track of your rounds you should place a marker.
You will need
Worsted weight yarn
scrap yarn in contrasting colors if you are adding trim, eyes, nose, or ears
Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
Smaller crochet hook or yarn needle to weave in ends.
To double crochet the body of your hat
Round 1) Chain 2 and double crochet 10 times into 2nd chain from hook or if you are using magic circle make 10 dc in loop.
Round 2) Make 2 dc’s in each stitch. Place marker on last stitch
made. You should have 20 stitches
Round 3) *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch* repeat
around (30 stitches total)
Round 4) *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches* repeat
around (40 stitches total)
**check your sizing. If your circle measures 4.5″ across then you are right on track to make a 0-3 month size hat that will fit a head up to about 14.5″ around. If your circle is too small switch to a smaller hook (I used to crochet very tightly and had to use a K (6.5 mm) hook to achieve this). If your circle is too large use a smaller hook here. (Ally crochets very loose and would probably need a tiny F hook here).
Rounds 5-8– dc in each stitch around hat making sure to
move marker with each completed row.
If you will be attaching earflaps crochet until hat measures 4“- 4.25″
tall and do NOT cut yarn. Then proceed with earflaps.
If you will not be attaching earflaps crochet until hat is 5“
tall, cut yarn, fasten and weave in end.
This pattern makes double crochet earflaps which are rounded at the bottom. To make ear covers in single crochet you can use the earflap portion of the directions for my Puppy Dog animal Hat pattern
These are worked in rows back and forth. Updated November 2, 2014
Row 1) Dc 8 stitches beyond your maker, Ch 3 and turn (8 dc)
Row 2) Dc in the next st and each of the nxt 6 across Turn (7 dc + ch3 = 8 dc)
Row 3) Do not chain. Starting with the nxt st, DC each across (7 DC) Turn
Row 4) Do not chain. Starting with the nxt st, DC each across. Turn (6 DC)
Row 5) Do not chain. Starting with the nxt st, DC each across (5 DC) Turn

Row 7) Do not chain. Starting with the nxt st, DC each across (3 DC)
Row 8) Do not chain. Starting with the nxt st, DC each across (2 DC) Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in and fasten.
Now flip your hat over so you have the top of the hat nearest you and the earflap you just made on the righthand side. Like the picture.
Now count 13 stitches to the left of where your existing earflap starts. Join your yarn in the stitch to the left of the 14th.
Row 1) ch 3, and DC in the same stitch. DC in the next 7 st across.
Now follow rows 2-8 of the earflap directions.
When you are done with the 2nd earflap don’t cut the yarn just yet. Fold the hat in half, line up the earflaps and double check to make sure you go them the same length. When you are good to go fasten off, cut yarn and weave in your ends.
Trim- with contrast yarn attach with slip stitch behind right
ear. Ch 1, and sc around entire hat and earflaps. Make sure when you are single crocheting along the sides of the earflaps that you make 2 sc in each dc row. Cut yarn and
weave in loose ends.
Leave the earflaps as is or add braids, decorate with a chain and pom poms.
You can use this hat as a basis for any animal critter hat you like. Below are directions for noses, eyes, ears, etc for
-Easter Chick Hat 6-9 Mos
– Panda Hat
