Gauge= at end of round 4 circle should measure approximately
(Newborn) 4 inches
(0-3 mos.) 4.5″ across.
Adjust your hook size accordingly.

You will need:

  • 5 mm crochet hook (size h/8)
  • Worsted weight yarn
  • scrap yarn in contrasting colors for the ears, nose, eye patch, and trim
  • ruler or tape measure
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • If you are attaching buttons you will need sewing thread.

Pattern  Stitches for Newborn are show with 0-3 Mos in [brackets]

Round 1– Using a magic circle DC 10 [11] into loop.  Join and tighten 10[11]
If you don’t know how to magic circle you can chain 2 and make the 10 dc into the 2nd ch from the hook.

Round 2– ch3.  *2 dc in next st*  repeat from * around and join –20 dc[ 22]

Round 3– ch3 *dc in next, 2 dc in next* repeat from * around and join –30dc [33]

Round 4– ch3  *dc in next 2, 2 dc in next* repeat from * around and join –40 dc [44]

Rounds 5- 8    ch 3, dc in each st around, join.40 dc [44]

Round 9 0-3 Months only, ch 3, dc in each st around, join [44 dc]

If you will be adding earflaps do not cut your yarn.
If you will not be adding ear flaps–weave in ends and you’re done!

Add the Ear Flaps– Both Newborn and 0-3 months are worked the same way and with the same number of stitches.

With yarn still attached:

  1. ch1, sc in the same and in the next 9 stitches. (10 sc)
  2. ch1, turn.  SC across the next 10 stitches
  3. ch1, turn.  sc2tog, sc across (9 sc)
  4. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (8 sc)
  5. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (7 sc)
  6. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (6 sc)
  7. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (5 sc)
  8. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (4 sc)
  9. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (3 sc)
  10. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (2 sc)
  11. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (1 sc)

Determine which you would like to be the back of the hat, count  7 [9] stitches from where your earflap ends and attach yarn in next stitch.  Repeat steps 1-11 of the earflap pattern.

Choose your contrast yarn and single crochet around the outside of the hat.   If I know I will be adding braids or ties I like to start crocheting my trim in the point of one of the ear flaps.  See the pic

If you will be adding ties or tassles to the hat work 3 sc into the point of each ear flap.  Info about tassels at the end of this pattern.  You don’t want to add those yet, you have sewing to do 😉

Puppy Dog Ears – floppy
Leaving a tail of 12” ch 7-
1- dc in 4th ch from hook and all ch across (4)
2- ch2, turn, dc all (4), ch 2 and turn
3- Increase by making 2 dc in 1st stitch, dc across and 2
dc in last stitch (6) ch 2 and turn
4-5 6 7 dc all, ch 2, turn (6)
8- dc2tog, dc 2, dc2tog, ch2, turn
9- dc all (4) do not turn
10-  ch1, sc in side of ear and sc around ear.  When you get back up to the top row make 3 sc’s in top corner.  At last stitch make 2 sc’s in same sp you made your ch1.  This will make the corners at the tops of the ears square and easier to sew to the hat.

Repeat for 2nd ear.

Puppy Dog Eyes
(Make 2) If you want crocheted eyes as in the first photo below this is how the can be made.
Ch 2
Row 1- 6 hdc in last chain from hook 6
Row 2- 2 hdc in each sc. Slip stitch to join. (12)

Alternatively you can use buttons for the eyes, or you can use beads.  If you make the eyes in a dark color you can add a little highlight by simply embroidering with two stitches of white yarn.  SEE THE EXAMPLES OF HOW I HAVE MADE EYES ON OTHER HATS BELOW.

Puppy Dog Eye Patch
(optional- shown as blue in photo)
With eye patch color, ch 2 and follow instructions for
eyes except add an additional row as follows
Ch 2
Row 1– 6 hdc in last chain from hook 6, do not turn, place marker in last stitch
Row 2– 2 hdc in each sc do not turn, place marker in last stitch. (12)

Row 3– *1hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next* rpt from *  around do not turn, place marker in last stitch(18)

Row 4– *1hdc in each of the next st, 2 hdc in the next* rpt from *  around (24)

Fasten off

Puppy Dog Nose-
Ch 2
Row 1: 6 sc in last chain from hook
Row 2: 2 sc in each sc. (12)
Rows 3 &4: sc in each sc around (12)

Black Tri-angle on nose:
Keeping a long tail, Ch 5, dc in 4th ch from hook, sc in remaining stitch.  Fasten off.  Sew to completed nose, use tails to embroider a doggie smile.

Assemble the pieces and sew them to your hat.  Make sure to put a cotton ball, a little bit of polyfill or some yarn inside the nose before attaching it all the way.

Add tassels or braids if you wish.

The tassels were made with per ear: 3 strands white, 3 strands gray, 3 strands blue. They were cut approximately 12″ long

Easy Tassels– Cut 12″ sections of the yarn you are using for tassles.  I like to use 9 or 12 strands per ear flap.  Pull them thru the ends of the flaps where you made 3 single crochets.  Braid them or twist them, fasten with a piece of yarn and repeat for the 2nd ear flap.

Enjoy your hat and pat yourself on the back!!

Remember to post a picture of your hat at the Ravelry pattern page.
