IMG_3840

First make a plain headband by using worsted weight yarn and an I crochet hook.  Directions below

Chain 66

Row 1) Half double crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook  and in each of the remaining chains.  ( 65 hdc made)

Row 2)  Chain 2 and turn.  Half double crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across

Row 3) Chain 2 and turn.  Half double crochet in the front loop only of each stitch across

Rows 4, 6 & 8) Chain 2 and turn.  Half double crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across

Rows 5, 7 & 9) Chain 2 and turn.  Half double crochet in the front loop only of each stitch across

Using your crochet hook, slip stitch the row ends together to form a tube.  Cut yarn and weave in ends.

With a contrasting color, attach the yarn some where near your seam.  Ch1 and single crochet in the same stitch as your join.  You will now begin the Reverse Single Crochet (or Crab stitch or Crawl stitch) Single crochet in the next stitch to the right.  Continue around the headband in this direction.  Fasten yarn.

Repeat the same process for the top of the headband.

Round 4 — * chain 4, in the chain space made in the previous round, make 3 triple crochet, chain 4 and slip stitch *  Repeat from * in the remaining 5 chain spaces you made in the previous round. (6 petals made)

Place the flower over the seam and sew to your headband.

Crochet Tie-back headband – baby photo prop pattern

Free pattern to make a crochet tie back headband.

These work great for photographers to use in shoots with babies and newborns because tie backs are so versatile.  For the sleepy eyed newborns the headband doesn’t even have to be tied, it can just be tucked away and hidden.

These are fun to make and a great way to use up those scraps of left over yarn that you ‘knew’ you would find a use for ;)

You can use any size hook and yarn of your choice.
I used:

  • Size J crochet hook (6.5 mm)
  • Worsted Weight- (MC)Turquoise – Not sure on what brand I used but it feels like Red Heart Super Saver.  The (CC)  white is heavy so it is probably Caron Natura or Red Heart with Love
  • A yarn needle, scissors, yard stick.
Headband-
  1. With MC make a chain approximately 25 inches long.  If it helps mine is about 70 chains.  Fasten off, tie each end.
Flower-

You can use any flower pattern you want.    For the turquoise one I:

  1. With MC Ch2, join in 1st chain made to form a circle.
  2. *Ch 3, DC into circle, ch3, slip stitch into circle *  Rpt from * 5 more times for a total of 6 petals.
  3. Fasten off.  With yarn needle sew flower to center of the chain.
For the middle part of the flower
  1. With CC, ch 2 and ss into 1st ch made to form a circle.
  2. Make 4 sc’s into circle.
  3. Fasten off, pull tight and sew into center of flower.

Wala, you’re done!  It probably took you longer to read the directions than it did to do the actual crocheting.   Have fun with this, try a version with ch4’s and triple crochets or even with 2 stitches between each of your chains.

Puppy Dog Crochet Hat Pattern – toddler size

Puppy Dog Hat Crochet Pattern
1-3 years

You will need
· Worsted weight yarn
· scrap yarn in contrasting colors if you are adding trim, eyes, nose, or ears
· Size K (6.5mm) and size I (5.5 mm) crochet hooks
· Smaller crochet hook or yarn needle to weave in ends.
· Yarn needle to attach optional facial features

Gauge= End of Round 2 = 2 ¾” diameter

The photos shown, and pattern was created using

White Hat — I Love This Yarn acrylic  ( Red Heart Super Saver Café for ears and nose, Red Heart Super Saver Grey Heather for eyes and Red Heart Super Saver Light Blue for eye patch and contrasting trim)

Off White Hat — Red Heart Super Saver in “Soft White”, Cafe for ears and nose and Light Blue for eye patch.

These are heavier worsted weight yarns therefore if you are using a different weight yarn you may need to adjust your hook size and/or number of stitches.

HAT Pattern
Hat is crochet in a spiral (continuous rounds) meaning you will not join at the end of each round.  It is recommended you place a marker to keep track of your last stitch in each round.
Crown  with 6.5 mm (K) hook
Round 1– Chain 2 and double crochet 10 times into 2nd chain from hook or
if you are using magic circle make 10 dc in loop.
Round 2– Make 2 dc’s in each stitch. Place marker on last stitch
made. You should have 20 stitches
Round 3– *1 dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch* repeat from * around (30 stitches total)
Round 4 –*1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch* repeat around (40 stitches total)
Round 5–*1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch* repeat from * around (48 stitches total).  At the end of this round your circle should measure approximately  6″ across which will give you a hat 18.75 -19.25“
Rounds 6 – 11 (or until hat is approx 6 ½” long when measuring from top center to bottom.) Dc in each stitch around hat making sure to move marker with each completed row.
Leave marker in place –this will be the back center of your hat.
Don’t cut yarn yet.

weave in loose ends.

To add a dog face to the crochet hat just crochet and sew on these embellishments. Because these animal hat patterns are for babies please make sure the eyes, ears, noses and other parts are securely sewn to your finished garment.

Directions given are for sewing the embellishments on with yarn and a yarn needle. If a neat appearance on the inside of the hat is a big concern for you, you may find regular sewing thread to be more invisible.

Baby Booties — Basketball shoe look

I got this pattern from Bev’s Country Cottage in the list she provided Ravelry Group Members for the Bootie Brigade and crocheted them up in 30 minutes this morning.

30 minute crochet baby bootie pattern

The reminded me of basketball shoes so I put the pretend laces up the front and omitted the rollover cuff.

The pattern takes less than 30 yards of worsted weight and a 5 mm crochet hook.   Each bootie took me 15 minutes.

You can get this pattern by visiting Bev’s Country Cottage at:  http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/bevs-quick-bootie.html

Crochet Dishcloth -easy, easy, easy

Easy and quick to make crochet dishcloth pattern
Although faded from some serious abuse by tweens this crochet dishcloth is holding strong

Keep in mind this was made about 7 months ago and has been in regular use at least once a week since.  And keep in mind this poor dishcloth suffered some serious nail polish, polish remover and then hot bleachy water ‘before mom sees our mess’ (Yeah I saw it…..sigh)  abuse, and is still holding strong.

I’m thinking this is probably the very first thing I ever crocheted and completed.  This is single crochet with colors being changed after every second row.  The only hook I had back then was an “N” and because I had no idea how many to chain to make a cloth (didn’t even think to look online for patterns then!!!)

I just got out a dishcloth I liked the size of and chained til it was as long as that,

single crochet across,

chained 1, turned

and repeated the process til it was square.

If you want to make home dish dishcloths and would prefer not to knit then crochet is your ticket.  I hooked this up while watching a movie so it couldn’t have taken more than a couple hours even in my newbiness.

Crochet Flower Lesson

Remember the video I posted of the lady making a half double crochet Easter Bunny hat in this blog post?  Well I realized I had accidentally removed her video from the post when I added a knitted pattern either last night or this morning so I went to find it and ended up glued to her video lessons for quite a while.

She has some really cool crochet flowers that she walks you thru making.  They are done in groups of 3 and layered.  I so want to make one to embellish either a hat or a headband.

Here is her video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpRWWHemkHs

  10. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (2 sc)
  11. ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc across (1 sc)

Determine which you would like to be the back of the hat, count  7 [9] stitches from where your earflap ends and attach yarn in next stitch.  Repeat steps 1-11 of the earflap pattern.

Choose your contrast yarn and single crochet around the outside of the hat.   If I know I will be adding braids or ties I like to start crocheting my trim in the point of one of the ear flaps.  See the pic

single-crochet-around-hat

If you will be adding ties or tassles to the hat work 3 sc into the point of each ear flap.  Info about tassels at the end of this pattern.  You don’t want to add those yet, you have sewing to do 😉

Puppy Dog Ears – floppy
Leaving a tail of 12” ch 7-
1- dc in 4th ch from hook and all ch across (4)

8- dc2tog, dc 2, dc2tog, ch2, turn
9- dc all (4) do not turn
10-  ch1, sc in side of ear and sc around ear.  When you get back up to the top row make 3 sc’s in top corner.  At last stitch make 2 sc’s in same sp you made your ch1.  This will make the corners at the tops of the ears square and easier to sew to the hat.

Repeat for 2nd ear.

Puppy Dog Eyes
(Make 2) If you want crocheted eyes as in the first photo below this is how the can be made.
Ch 2
Row 1- 6 hdc in last chain from hook 6
Row 2- 2 hdc in each sc. Slip stitch to join. (12)

Alternatively you can use buttons for the eyes, or you can use beads.  If you make the eyes in a dark color you can add a little highlight by simply embroidering with two stitches of white yarn.  SEE THE EXAMPLES OF HOW I HAVE MADE EYES ON OTHER HATS BELOW.

Puppy Dog Eye Patch
(optional- shown as blue in photo)
With eye patch color, ch 2 and follow instructions for
eyes except add an additional row as follows
Ch 2

Fasten off

Puppy Dog Nose-
Ch 2
Row 1: 6 sc in last chain from hook
Row 2: 2 sc in each sc. (12)
Rows 3 &4: sc in each sc around (12)

Black Tri-angle on nose:
Keeping a long tail, Ch 5, dc in 4th ch from hook, sc in remaining stitch.  Fasten off.  Sew to completed nose, use tails to embroider a doggie smile.

Assemble the pieces and sew them to your hat.  Make sure to put a cotton ball, a little bit of polyfill or some yarn inside the nose before attaching it all the way.

Add tassels or braids if you wish.

attach-tassels-to-earflaps
The tassels were made with per ear: 3 strands white, 3 strands gray, 3 strands blue. They were cut approximately 12″ long

Easy Tassels– Cut 12″ sections of the yarn you are using for tassles.  I like to use 9 or 12 strands per ear flap.  Pull them thru the ends of the flaps where you made 3 single crochets.  Braid them or twist them, fasten with a piece of yarn and repeat for the 2nd ear flap.

Enjoy your hat and pat yourself on the back!!

Remember to post a picture of your hat at the Ravelry pattern page.
